Data-driven China travel advice from a decade of on-the-ground experience

I've spent over a decade exploring China's cities, mountains, and remote corners — from the frozen streets of Harbin in January to the misty rice terraces of Guilin in April. I built this guide because I kept hearing the same question from friends, colleagues, and fellow travelers: "When should I actually go?"
The answer always started with "it depends" — and that felt like a cop-out. So I set out to build something that doesn't just tell you the best month, but shows you why, compares your options, and lets you make the call based on what matters to you.
Every recommendation on this site comes from a combination of aggregated climate data, years of on-the-ground travel experience, and — most importantly — a genuine desire to help you have the trip you're dreaming about.
How We Build Our Recommendations
Climate Data
Temperature ranges and rain days are based on 10-year averages (2016-2025) from the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) for each region. We update these figures annually using the most recent complete-year dataset.
Flight Prices
Round-trip flight cost estimates are sourced from aggregated Google Flights data for US departure cities, sampled monthly. Figures represent median prices and are refreshed quarterly.
Crowd Intelligence
Crowd level estimates combine official Chinese holiday calendars, tourism board visitor statistics, and crowd-sourced reports from major attraction operators. Peak period assessments are verified against ticket sell-out patterns published by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism.
First-Hand Experience
Our seasonal narratives and regional tips are based on firsthand travel across 20+ Chinese cities. If we haven't been there in that season, we don't write about it as if we have.
Editorial Policy
- 1. All content is written by humans with direct travel experience. We do not publish AI-generated content without expert human review and editing.
- 2. Weather and price data are updated at minimum quarterly. Festival dates are updated annually based on the Chinese lunar calendar.
- 3. We do not accept payment for recommendations. No sponsored rankings. No paid placements. If we recommend a time or place, it's because we believe it's the right call — period.
- 4. Corrections: If you find an error, email us. We'll fix it and note the correction publicly. Accuracy matters more than pride.
Why We Built This
Most "best time to visit" guides give you a single sentence answer. China isn't a single place — it spans five climate zones, 9.6 million square kilometers, and the largest annual human migration on Earth. A one-size-fits-all answer doesn't work here.
